Detecting SIM boxes and identifying Interconnect Bypass Fraud

Fraudsters bypass the mobile network interconnection, directing incoming calls to a mobile network to on-network calls made by a range of SIM cards. From the mobile operator’s point of view, on-network calls are generated instead of interconnection mobile terminated calls. The revenue loss is directly related to the difference between the interconnect termination price minus the retail price of mobile on-network calls.

In addition to the revenue loss, SIM boxes also cause indirect damage, such as the following:

  • Non delivery of the Calling Line Identity (CLI)
  • Poor quality of service and network congestion
  • Excessive number of dropped calls
